The History written by owner
The Scout was recently owned by a guy who was restoring to original. He had put in new body panels, and fixed all the rust. He replaced all the glass and all the rubber,
door & window seals, etc. The interior was all Olive Green, and the original seats were in incredibly good shape. He had started rebuilding transfer cases, etc., but hadn’t
gotten around to the engine and transmission. Then it was given a Fire Orange paintjob (the original color). When the owner needed to dump some toys, he sold it to an
employee for $4800.00. That guy only kept it 6 months - I think because it had the hot start problem and an intermittent gold box, and he didn’t understand Scouts.
I bought it, also for $4800.00, and have driven it daily since March of 1999.
A Remote Solenoid was the first upgrade. Then I put in a new master cylinder a couple of months later when the brakes felt soft. Gradually, the Gold Box reared its ugly
head. It was fairly tough to diagnose since it was very intermittent. But a new gold box cured everything. The thing runs like the proverbial top. In the morning, I can
barely turn on the key, and let it go, and it is cranking no matter what the weather. It’s really peppy on the street, too. I’ve surprised a lot of those little black cars (what
the heck are they, anyway? And where do they come from?). As far as offroad, I’ve done a few easy to moderate trails in Colorado, mostly at high altitude. Argentine
Pass several times, and several others. I did Ptarmigan pass from Shrine Road, then up to Resolution Mt. (13000 ft.?). My friends Mike (with the Toy on steroids) and
Dave (and a surprisingly capable Dakota) passed a bunch of J**ps that were coughing and stuttering, but my little 2 barrel Holley never missed a beat AND looked
good doing it. However at this stage of her life, she’s getting to be a bit of a low rider. And remember this is a STOCK vehicle. Hence the major upgrades with
D and C EXTREME.
I also have a 78 Traveler (no one can own just one) that gets its chance next for a full facelift.
What will we do to this seemingly innocent Scout II?
