As always day one of the actual conversion consists of cutting the front suspension apart and adding the reverse shackle. The Scout
80/800's get the same “under frame” style as the Scout II reverse shackle. Since there are no kits available for any Scout, we have
to custom built the Reverse Shackle conversion from scratch. (We have started to look into producing a kit for BOTH Scout 80/800s
and Scout II's.) After the front towers are welded to the frame, we tie them together with thick wall angle iron for extra support.
We are using the stock rear spring perches and a custom shackle.
The big upset of this conversion was some axles we traded. D and C secured front and rear Dana 44’s from a 1976 Scout II. Here is a
picture of what we found inside after we removed the pinion itself. Turns out that the entire front pumpkin was literally half
stuffed with mud, rust and grime.
All bearings were toast and seals were in need of replacement. After soaking the ring and pinion in parts cleaner we
will be able to salvage them. Everything else in the front differential, besides the spider gears, is being replaced -
including the disk rotors. The whole axle housing is also being cleaned with a Hotsy. This little incident put our
project a week behind and cost well over $1000 extra. Rrrrr...setbacks. Here is a picture of one of our problem parts (this is after soaking and cleaning!)
Turns out that the only pieces we were able to use from the front axle are the housing, axle shafts
themselves, spider gears (barely) and the ring and pinion. Everything else was replaced (hubs,
bearings, seals, rotors, calipers, bolts, etc.
