DAY 3
EXTREME BUILDUP 2000 Project 2
Damian's 1970 800a

Now that we have all the front axle parts put back together, we started on the actual brake and steering systems. Giddum Up supplied the rotors and misc. parts, but we had to go to the regular supplier for the calipers.

The steering system is custom fabricated at a local machine shop. As stated before, we are using thick wall DOM tubing and hiem joints to reconstruct the drag link and tie rods. With the stock non-power steering the free moving hiem joints will make steering easier. Since we are using the same joints for the rear 1/4 elliptic, we will only need to carry a few of these small joints for emergency use on the trail. These pictures are of the links and BEFORE we tightened them up, we are going to look for a straight pitman arm and then the all the bolts will be shortened and the steering will be complete.

The rear differential was much more pleasing to work with than the front. It turns out that there wasn’t much wrong with it. We did toss the old brakes and start fresh with new pads, backing plates, hardware and wheel cylinders. But other than that a simple axle rebuild (new bearings and seals) was all we did. The old Trak-Lok and spider gears were thrown out and replaced with a new Lock-Rite Locker. Here is a couple more pictures.
