EXTREME BUILDUP 2000 Project 2
Damian's 1970 800a

Now that you have the idea of what we are trying to do, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

First we want to get the lower links put on. The first thing we do is flip the rear axle over and take out the old spring perches. The cutting marks are weld and ground away and we start by adding some new mounts for the lower links exactly where they were. (Since the spring under on 800’s line up perfectly with the frame rails this served as an easy alignment tool for the new mounts). Another nice thing about the links is that the mounts will be 1 3/4" wide to fit our hiem joints (which again is equal to the old perches).

The axle is then placed on top of a set of jack stands to keep it in place while we install the links. You may notice that the jack stand in the middle holds the pinion at the desired angle, this way we can install and adjust the links without worrying about losing our axle placement. With the axle in place and the links are mounted to it, we move to the frame mounts. These lower links run just below the frame and attach to the frame rails about were the doors end. Everything is fabricated from 1/4 inch plates and seem welded for strength. Grade 8 bolts are used throughout.

As seen, we made a C-channel that straddles the frame. This way there is allot of surface area that we weld to. The more broad the plates, the more the load is distributed on the rails. With our mounts formed around the frame, we have the strength of both walls and bottom to count on. The mount itself is made with a slant in case we high-center and need to use the frame as a "skid pad". Here are some more pictures.
